For a long time, Apple has used Information Technology’s PowerVR GPU to provide us with the impressive experience while using their products, such a while using a graphically intensive gaming apps. However, it looks like this partnership is set to come to an end with the tech giant developing its graphic processors to have a better r control on their devices.
If iPhone comes with Apples own GPU then it will be a major blow to mobile GPU designers are they won’t get any royalties from iPhones and iPads that are produced starting from next year. There are also rumors regarding Apple taking over British chipmaker, but those seem to have come to rest as of now.
Now looking at the matter in hand, even if Apple can successfully develop its own GPU Information Technology believes the Apple won’t be able to use them without infringing upon their patents.
“Apple has used Imagination’s technology and intellectual property for many years. It has formed the basis of Graphics Processor Units (“GPUs”) in Apple’s phones, tablets, iPods, TVs, and watches. Apple has asserted that it has been working on a separate, independent graphics design to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology.
Apple has not presented any evidence to substantiate its assertion that it will no longer require Imagination’s technology, without violating Imagination’s patents, intellectual property, and confidential information. Imagination has requested this evidence, but Apple has declined to provide it.”
The GPU present in iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is custom PowerVR GT7600 which is not that different from the one present in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It is possible that Apple produces better and better smartphones with each new release. What do you think? Can Apple pull this feat off?
